Best Low Calorie Snacks to Bring While Playing Golf
If you are anything like us, you may need a few energy-boosting snacks to get you through to the 18th hole. We can have a nutritious meal before going out to play golf but still seem to lose some energy mid-round if we don’t have the proper drinks and snacks on hand.
It is so important to give your body the nutrients and energy it needs while you are playing golf. Depending on how many holes you play, you could be out on the course anywhere from 2-5 hours. Bringing a nutritious snack and hydrating drink will significantly help you stay alert and energized during your game!
Staying Hydrated
If you are walking your round on a hot sunny day, your body will be crying out for some water and electrolytes. Make sure you give yourself plenty of water before, during, and after your game. It may be fun to drink alcohol while playing golf at times, but it will definitely take a toll on your overall energy level and stamina. If you like to enjoy an adult beverage while playing, just make sure you also have water on hand.
Bringing enough water and/or sports drink with you, can really help you stay hydrated and feel focused. Nothing is worse than standing in the sun for hours craving a cold drink and not having one close by to quench your thirst. We find that bringing a thermal bottle like a YETI filled with ice usually lasts the whole 18 holes. Keep filling the thermos up with water to keep it icy cold. If you find drinking water boring, try adding just a touch of lite lemonade to your ice water and it will add some sweetness while still being extremely refreshing.
In addition to staying hydrated, it is smart to bring a small snack with you in case you start to get hungry in the middle of your round...no one wants to play with hangry golfers!
These are some nutritious and low calorie snacks to consider bringing with you on the course when you need that extra little boost of energy!
Best Nutritious, Low Calorie Snacks:
Trail Mix/Mixed Nuts
This is personally our go-to snack on the course. It's easy, delicious, and you don't have to worry about anything getting warm or spoiled. You can obviously buy pre-packaged bags of trail mix, but it's also fun to make your own! We love a mix of almonds, cashews, pumpkin seeds, craisins, dried cherries (...and maybe some dark chocolate in there). You can make a mix of any nuts, seeds, or dried fruit combo of your liking and it will help keep you full and energized. Even though nuts are higher calorically, when eaten in moderation they are chock full of healthy fats and protein.
Carrot Sticks & Veggies
Another easy, no hassle snack for the course are sliced veggies such as carrot sticks, celery sticks, cucumbers, sliced peppers etc. We like to slice these, stick them in a sandwich bag and snack on them while riding in the golf cart. There is no mess, nothing to spill on yourself, and you feel good about eating a healthy snack. If you want to add a little excitement, you can pack some hummus to dip the veggies into. There are individual hummus cups/packets sold in most grocery stores that are perfect to pack. If you are not a hummus fan, nothing is better than dipping carrot sticks in classic Ranch dressing. If you pack the dressing in a tiny Tupperware container it is easy to bring along as well and is easy to eat in the cart between holes.
Energy Bar
An energy bar is a classic golf course snack and usually does a good job of holding you over until your next meal. They are usually higher in calories, but sometimes you need those calories to sustain you and fill you up. There are many great energy bar options with healthy ingredients that do the trick. If you want to make your own bars to ensure that there are nutritious ingredients, luckily there are lots of easy, delicious recipes available! Many of them include oats, nuts, peanut butter, fruits, seeds, etc. Energy bars are great to keep in your golf bag to grab whenever you need!
Turkey & Cheese Roll Ups
Turkey and cheese roll ups are a great snack to bring as they are packed with protein and will fill you right up. You do need to make sure you keep this snack cold, however. If you are bringing a small cooler to put in the back of your golf cart, this would be a great addition. If you are playing 18 holes on a hot summer day, this snack will basically feel like a light lunch to hold you over until your next meal. You can add lettuce, and/or tomato to spruce these snacks up into little breadless sandwiches if you will.
Assorted Fruit
Another great snack option while golfing is assorted fruit! Pack a bag of grapes, strawberries, blueberries, or other tasty fruit for a light and healthy snack on the course. Packed with antioxidants and vitamins, fruit is always a good choice for snacking. If a bag of berries seems like a potentially messy idea, an apple or orange may be a neater option. If you are a berry fan, and feel like packing those blueberries and raspberries, just do us a favor and be sure not to get any stains on your nice new Nevis Golf Co. apparel ;)
Hard Boiled Eggs
Hard Boiled Eggs may seem like kind of a high maintenance snack to bring on the course, they are one of the best options to keep you energized and focused. We would recommend peeling them before hand however, and just packing them in a little sandwich bag so you don't have to worry about any mess. They are very healthy, will keep you focused longer, and give you some added energy. Add a little salt and pepper on there, keep in a sandwich bag in your cooler and you are good to go!
Final Thoughts
We all know that eating nutritious foods and drinking plenty of water is key in feeling our best and having energy to get us through the day. When playing golf, not only is your body active for hours, but you are also outside in the hot sun, wind, or even rain. It is so important to always have a few snacks and drinks on hand to give your body the stamina you need for a day full of playing golf.
